WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP: AT LUM CINEMA WE SAY STOP TO PERIOD-SHAMING AT WORK



WE SHOULD ‘COMMEMORATE’ AND NOT ‘CELEBRATE’ THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

FOR CENTURIES WOMEN HAVE FACED VIOLENCE AND ABUSE BOTH PHYSICALLY AND VERBALLY AT HOME OR IN THEIR WORKPLACES. ONLY ON FEBRUARY 28TH, 1909 WAS CELEBRATED THE FIRST 'INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY' IN THE UNITED STATES, AND SINCE THEN WE HAVE DEFINITELY ACHIEVED MANY GREAT THINGS AND WOMEN ARE A

LOT SAFER AND VALUED TODAY, HOWEVER, WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE TO USE THE WORD 'TO CELEBRATE' FOR THIS HISTORICAL AND FUNDAMENTAL DAY, BUT WE SHOULD RATHER 'COMMEMORATE' IT. WE SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE REASON WHY THE 'INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY' WAS ESTABLISHED. MANY WOMEN LOST THEIR LIVES IN FIGHTING FOR THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS, AND EVEN IF A LOT HAS BEEN DONE TOWARDS CREATING A MORE EQUAL AND FAIR SOCIETY, WE'RE STILL WITNESSING UNEQUAL BEHAVIOURS FROM BOTH THE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND THE POLITICAL SYSTEM. THEREFORE, WE SHOULDN'T CELEBRATE IT CONSIDERING WE'RE NOT QUITE THERE YET. THERE ARE STILL COUNTLESS OF THINGS THAT REQUIRE OUR IMMEDIATE CONCERN AND ACTIONS.


‘THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA’ AND WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP.

ON THIS COMING MARCH 8TH, FOR THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, OUT OF ALL THE FILMS WHICH ARE LABELLED AS 'STRONG WOMEN' FILMS, WE CHOSE TO SCREEN 'THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA' DIRECTED BY DAVID FRANKEL IN 2006. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE LOCKDOWN RESTRICTIONS THAT ARE STILL IN PLACE, IMPEDING US TO GET STARTED WITH OUR EVENTS, WE DECIDED TO WRITE SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR YOU ON THE SUBJECT MATTER. WHY 'THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA'? BECAUSE THE FILM IS SOMETIMES UNDERESTIMATED AS A GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR WOMEN IN THEIR CAREERS, NEVERTHELESS, WE THINK, ON THE CONTRARY, IT REPRESENTS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF FEMALE POWER IN THE WORKPLACE.


THE BEAUTY OF THE FILM IS THAT WOMEN ARE IN CHARGE AND PLAY IMPORTANT ROLES WITHIN THE COMPANY THEY WORK FOR. SURE, MIRANDA PRIESTLY'S CHARACTER (PLAYED BY THE ICONIC ACTRESS MERYL STREEP) MIGHT NOT SEEM LIKE THE CLASSIC WOMEN'S STEREOTYPE, BECAUSE THE DOMINANT ATTITUDE IS FOR MEN, MEN USUALLY ACT THAT WAY. LIKE ANDY SACHS (THE NEW INTERN ASSISTANT TO MIRANDA PRIESTLY INTERPRETED BY ANNE HATHAWAY) SAYS IN A SCENE IN PARIS “IF MIRANDA WERE A MAN, NO ONE WOULD NOTICE ANYTHING ABOUT HER, EXCEPT HOW GREAT SHE IS AT HER JOB”.


THE CONTRAST BETWEEN MIRANDA AND ANDY, BOTH MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE FILM, SHOWS A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OF HOW WOMEN ARE AND CAN BE PERCEIVED WHEN OPERATING AN INFLUENTIAL ROLE. MIRANDA IS POWERFUL AND NOT ALWAYS CORDIAL. HOWEVER, THIS IS THE MAIN REASON WHY POTENTIALLY MOST WOMEN HESITATE IN UPHOLDING A POWERFUL POSITION BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE PERCEIVED AS KIND, LOVELY AND WARM-HEARTED. CAN'T IT BE BOTH? OF COURSE IT CAN. THE FILM PORTRAYS THAT WITHOUT A DOUBT.


HOW OFTEN ARE WOMEN ENCOURAGED TO DO THAT THOUGH? SOME WOMEN WE SEE HOLDING POWERFUL LEADERSHIP POSITIONS ARE OFTEN WOMEN WHO ARE URGED TO ACT LIKE MEN OTHERWISE THEY WON'T BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY OR IN CONSIDERATION. THERE'S A LOT OF STIGMA AROUND WOMEN AT WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE ERADICATED.


IN THE FILM, IT'S INSPIRING TO SEE A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY BEING RUN ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY BY WOMEN AS THIS IS ACTUAL PROOF THAT THE SO-CALLED 'WEAKER SEX' IS TOTALLY CAPABLE OF MAKING IMPORTANT DECISIONS, USE THEIR POWER RESPONSIBLY, AND BY EXERTING THEIR POWER EFFECTIVELY THEY OFTEN CONTRIBUTE TO POSITIVE CHANGE AND ADVANCEMENT.


'THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA' DEPICTS THE TOPICS OF GENDER AND POWER, ESPECIALLY BEING 'COMFORTABLE' IN A POWERFUL LEADERSHIP POSITION AT WORK.


HOW CAN WE DO THAT? WE CAME UP WITH AN IDEA...




AT LUM CINEMA WE DECIDED TO BECOME PERIOD-FRIENDLY

AT LUM CINEMA, AMONGST OTHER WORKERS, THERE'S WOMEN AND GAY EMPLOYEES WHO COVER LEADERSHIP POSITIONS, AND SINCE WE STARTED WORKING ON THE DRAFTING OF THE VALUES OF LUM CINEMA, WE REALISED THAT WE WERE CREATING A SORT OF WORK ENVIRONMENT THAT COULD BEST REPRESENT EVERYTHING THAT WE

HAVE SEEN LACKING IN OTHER WORK ENVIRONMENTS UNTIL NOW. HAVING THE POSSIBILITY TO CHANGE A SYSTEM THAT IS NOT ALWAYS ON THE SIDE OF THE WORKERS IS A GREAT PRIVILEGE BUT ALSO A GREAT RESPONSIBILITY.


ONE OF THE MAIN ISSUES THAT THE WORLD HAS YET TO CHANGE IS INTRODUCING RIGHTS AND POLICIES TO SUPPORT WOMEN DURING THEIR MENSTRUAL CYCLE.


AT LUM CINEMA WE DECIDED TO BECOME 'PERIOD-FRIENDLY' AND ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT OUR WOMEN AND TRANSGENDER EMPLOYEES TO FEEL SAFE, FREE AND VALUED IN OUR WORKPLACE WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR PERIODS. THERE ARE MANY WOMEN WHO, DURING THE MENSTRUAL PERIOD, SUFFER IN A TRULY EXCRUCIATING WAY, WHILE OTHERS ARE ABLE TO MANAGE THE PAIN WITH PAINKILLERS. BUT WHAT RIGHTS DO WOMEN WHO SUFFER FROM PAINS OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE HAVE? UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS STILL NO LAW OR SUPPORT FROM OUR GOVERNMENTS FOR BOTH EMPLOYERS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES, EXCEPT FROM VERY FEW PRIVATE COMPANIES IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.


HERE'S WHAT WE INTRODUCED IN OUR VALUES & POLICIES TO SUPPORT OUR WOMEN AND TRANSGENDER EMPLOYEES IN THE WORKPLACE.

LUM MEANS 'LIGHT' IN THE LADIN MINORITY LANGUAGE, AND PRECISELY FOR THIS REASON, WE AIM TO BECOME THE BEACON OF HOPE FOR OUR COMMUNITIES AND VALUABLE EMPLOYEES THROUGH OUR CINEMATIC EVENTS.

ONE OF OUR STRONG VALUES IS BEING REVOLUTIONARY, BECAUSE WE CONSTANTLY STRIVE FOR THE BEST. CHANGE ONLY OCCURS WHEN IT STARTS FROM US FIRST, AND AS A CONSEQUENCE, IT WILL REFLECT BACK ONTO OUR ENVIRONMENT.
